Leh, Ladakh, India - On learning of the passing of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway, His Holiness wrote to his son, King Haakon VIII, offering "my heartfelt condolences to Your Majesty, the Royal Family, and the people of Norway. I had the opportunity to meet His Majesty in Oslo in May 2000, and I deeply appreciated his warmth and hospitality on that occasion."

I am saddened to learn of the devastating floods in the Rasuwa region of Nepal and Kyirong in Tibet, resulting in loss of life and heavy structural damage. I pray for all those who have lost their lives, and offer my sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved and to all those affected by this tragedy. Since this region has seen calamities in the past as well, these are certainly symptoms of a deeper underlying cause — whether climate change or other factors.

I would like to thank you all for your greetings on my 91st birthday. As I mentioned to those gathered here in Leh, Ladakh, India on 6 July, when I look back on my life, I see that the core of my practice has been to be of benefit to others. That is the altruistic motivation with which I wake up every day. Spreading compassion and kindness continues to be my life's primary mission. Such an attitude is essential to making our world a better place for everyone.

Shewatsel, Leh, Ladakh, India - Today is the 91st birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama according to the Western calendar, a joyful celebration of which was held at the Shewatsel teaching ground in Leh, Ladakh. As His Holiness drove in a mini-bus from his residence to the teaching platform, the devout, white silk scarves in their hands lined the way. Smiling, he saluted them as he passed.
